With the show going into its final season, I started to reflect on the past fourteen years and the episodes that are still, to this day, the nearest and dearest to my heart. To me they are my comfort episodes, the ones I go to when I need a laugh or a cry or the comfort of an old friend. I have picked my Top Six Favourites of each season, which I have to admit it was hard (going with only six?!).
Before you read my list, make your own list of season 1 favorites! It will be fun to compare your unbiased choices (before you are unduly influenced by my memories or picks) to mine. If you're joining Nightsky and The WFB in the #SPNSummer2019 Rewatch, viewing the TNT Supernatural Marathon, or rewatching at your own pace this hiatus, the episodes should be fresh in your mind! Save your list then, because you'll need it for a HUGE Hiatus challenge that The WFB will be sharing with you very soon! Nightsky reveals her Top 6 season 1 favorites after mine, so you'll have two WFB staff lists as a comparison (and as a hint of what's to come!)!
So without further ado, here's my list of Season One Favourites! The list is by order of appearance only, as they all are equal in their importance to me.
1) The Pilot
The Pilot was our introduction episode.
It introduced us to John and Mary Winchester,
and to our beloved brothers Sam and Dean Winchester.
Sam the younger, more serious and studious brother.
Dean the older , wisecracking, classic rock loving brother.
And of course there was the introduction to "Baby" Winchester. Who, through out the years, we learned was not only their transportation, but their protector and, at times, their home.
It established the MUSIC .... primarily from the 80's.
It introduced us to the Supernatural World of Urban Legends. Starting with The Lady in White, a ghost who killed those who were unfaithful. The CGI was amazing and super creepy.
It also started us on our journey of many mysteries and questions, like who or what killed....
Mary and ...
... Jessica, and why were they killed, and in that manner.
We were then left with the question, "Where is John and why is he not getting in touch with Dean,
and why did he leave his journal behind, when he never went anywhere without it?"
2) Home
The boys go back to their family home, due to Sam's visions.
A treasure box of the Winchester's old pictures are found.
We were introduced to clairvoyant Missouri.
This was our first little reassuring hug/squeeze from Dean to Sam.
Dean's emotional call to his dad.
A scared Sam asking Missouri, "What's happening to me?"
The spirit of Mary comes to save her boy after first apologising to Sam.
John also makes a surprise appearance, responding to Dean's call but he still won't speak to his boys.
As for the scary, the repairman getting his hand mulched in the disposal unit was one of those 'totally creeped out and have to look away' moments.
3) Faith
Dean gets electrocuted and his heart is now damaged.
Sam is fully devoted to saving Dean.
The amazing montage with Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear The Reaper".
Layla - how brave she was. "I guess if you're gonna have faith, you can't just have it when the miracles happen."
The makeup for the Reaper was pretty 'creepy'!
4) Nightmare
This was my first watched episode. I was absolutely blown away and immediately hooked.
I loved the comedic moments, especially when Sam and Dean posed as priests.
I loved the brother's relationship. The concern Dean had for his brother Sam ....
...when Sam had his visions.
The build up of suspense, knowing that the window was coming down.
The shock of seeing Dean getting shot and killed. Luckily it was only a vision. However, I to give kudos to the CGI Crew.
The acting was amazing by all. I found myself very sympathetic to Max, even though I couldn't condone his use of his abilities. Once again, the CGI crew was amazing with the floating gun...
The flying knife....
and the spinning letter opener.
5)Something Wicked
The flashback of the brothers when they were young. Seeing Dean caring for Sam.
Seeing John as a father in those early days. Some may have found him harsh, but after seeing his wife slashed and burning to death on their infant son's bedroom ceiling, I could understand his over protection and strict parenting....and his obsession for revenge.
The Striga monster that sucked out its young victim's life essence.
Sam learning more about what happened years ago from Dean.
I really like the character Michael. He was a bit of a smart-ass but he truly loved and cared about his younger brother.
6)Provenance
The motel room was priceless ....
.... including the brothers' reactions.
Meeting Sarah, and Sam's first attempt at a relationship after Jessica.
The brothers scaling the fence. I have to admit, I got all 'Twitter-pated' with that scene.
I loved how they both shut the car door at the same time. They would continue to show the brothers' closeness by doing various things in sync.
The creepy painting ....
....along with the creepy spirit.
So those are my top favourites for Season One.
